What is the body mass index (BMI)?
BMI (Body Mass Index) is a measurement used to roughly assess the relationship between your weight and height. It is often used to determine whether a person has a healthy body weight or is underweight or overweight. The BMI is calculated by dividing the weight in kilograms by the square of the height in meters.
The formula is: BMI = weight (kg) / (height (m))^2
The resulting value is divided into different categories based on general health guidelines.
BMI table according to the WHO classification
- Underweight: less than 18.5
- Normal weight: 18.5 – 24.9
- Overweight: 25 – 29.9
- Severely overweight (obesity grade I): 30 – 34.9
- Obesity grade II: 35 – 39.9
- Grade III obesity: 40 or more
However, it is important to note that BMI has its limitations. For example, it does not take into account the distribution of fat and muscle mass in the body or other important health factors such as diet, physical activity and genetic predisposition. Therefore, BMI should only be used as a rough estimate and not as the sole indicator of health. If you have any questions about your weight and health, it is advisable to consult a doctor or nutrition expert.
